Great Grandfather Joseph Sylvester Murray, Obituary - 1925

"In the Journal-Standard dated January 15th, appeared a short notice of the death of Joseph Murray, former Stephenson county resident, at his home in Huron, S.D

Joseph Sylvester Murray was born November 1853, in Ridott township, his parents dying when he was a mere boy, he was taken to raise by Samuel Lamb, of Ridott, Ill., with whom he had a home and remained until January 1882 when he was united in marriage to Caroline Rohkar, a daughter of the late Charles Rohkar of Ridott.  He followed the occupation of farming and stock raising in that community until March 1910, when he with his family removed to Huron, S.D. where he had purchased land some years before. On these farmlands he remained until about three years ago when he bought a home and moved to Huron, his son Henry afterwards operating the farm. Mr. Murray and his wife had spent about three months of the fall and early winter in the state of Washington and had been home but a few days when he as taken with a sore throat which developed into pneumonia which caused his death January 15th.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Caroline Murray and one son, Henry, who resides on the home farm at Huron; also a host of old Stephenson County friends, for no one knew Joe Murray but to like him. He was a man among men, a hard worker, honest, and upright in his dealings, and his many friends in this county are sorry to hear of his passing.  Joe Murray was one of the few remaining men who was a lover of fine horses and he took great pleasure in owning and driving a fine team of horses."   Written by H. There are 19 photos in Joseph’s photo album that pertain to him and his life.  I will expand on his biography very soon.  Enjoy the photos.
